Despite international cooperation, many countries around the world still can’t meet their blood needs.
Blood donations require specialized handling, have a maximum “shelf life” of only 42 days, and require constant testing to reduce contamination.
Pandemics, regional conflict and political instability both increase demand for donated blood and make it harder to get to where it’s needed most.
The Heme Foundation exists to address this urgent need. Our goal is a more healthy, safe and equitable world. We do this by fostering the development of safe and effective technologies that can be used where transfusions are needed but donated blood isn’t available.
These solutions can’t do everything blood does for the body. Instead, they offer the promise to safely take the place of red blood cells to deliver oxygen to the body, saving lives. These solutions help people in places where getting donated blood isn’t possible. If made widely available, they will save many lives. Produced at scale, they will also dramatically reduce the cost for transfusions.
